This workshop will provide an introduction into the critical appraisal and interpretation of the results of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. This knowledge enables physicians to incorporate the best available evidence to make clinical decisions on the treatment of individual patients and get to know the process of how recommendations in guidelines are developed.
The participants will get a short introduction into the hierarchy of evidence and learn which study designs best answer questions on benefits and side effect of a treatment. They will learn the main steps to conduct a systematic review and the principle ideas of meta-analyses.
We will work in small groups to interpret the results of meta-analyses and assess the quality of a systematic review (AMSTAR, GRADE) using examples of recent primary care studies.
