Location: Hall 3C
This session of the Research using Electronic Records in GP/FM Interest Group (RER-GP) shall focus on the setting up of a network of networks. We propose to document groups of family doctors who regularly collect data from electronic records collected during usual care, and set the stage for collaborative research projects in future. We shall discuss the impact of data protection regulations and patient rights on such research. We shall also discuss plans to make online tools available to improve data coding in electronic records, for clinical purposes and also for research. The ultimate aim is to perform high-quality research using electronic records in GP/FM, and to support the development of decision support systems for diagnosis in primary care through quality data collection and analysis.

13:10-14:10 EGPRN Educational Committee Lunch Workshop: "Harnessing the patient voice to improve quality and safety of care: patient and public engagement in research"

Chair: Ana Luisa Neves, Michael Harris
Location: Hall 3C

Patient and public involvement (PPI) is defined as “research being carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them”. By ‘public’, most definitions mean patients, potential patients, carers and people who use health and social care services. PPIE is about harnessing the patient voice, making sure the right research is done and challenging wasteful or unnecessary research, suggesting different research questions or priorities, raising the profile of particular diseases or symptoms - and, most importantly, helping medical researchers understand what outcomes matter most to patients. With the advent of the new technologies, patients are more and more engaged on their healthcare, and start taking an active role in the definition of research priorities that can better contribute to the quality and safety of the care that they receive. Therefore, the development of strategies to improve patient involvement have emerged as a key priority in medical research.

In this workshop we will revisit examples of public engagement in research, and explore practical opportunities and challenges of involving patients in research. We will also discuss the implications of the new policies on patient involvement on publishing activities, using the example of BMJ that from 2018 onwards requires a PPI statement for all its submissions.
