Objective: Point-of-Care ultrasonography (POCUS) is a method defined as a targeted ultrasound examination of patients with acute symptoms or syndromes that can be diagnosed by a healthcare worker at a site. The aim is to answer a specific diagnostic or therapeutic question or to ease the therapeutic procedure.
Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) has gained significant recognition as a valuable diagnostic tool in various medical specialties, including general practice. This abstract outlines a workshop aimed at equipping general practitioners (GPs) with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively utilize POCUS in their clinical practice. It should be a stimul for discussions about the use of POCUS in GP and it´s research later on during the meeting.
Methods: The workshop will focus on providing GPs with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and applications of POCUS in primary care settings. Participants will be introduced to the basics of ultrasonography, including machine operation, image acquisition, and interpretation. Additionally, they will learn specific POCUS techniques relevant to common clinical scenarios encountered in general practice. The facilitators will also share their experience with research of usage of POCUS in GP.
The workshop will adopt a practical and interactive approach to enhance participants' learning experience. Hands-on training sessions will be conducted using state-of-the-art ultrasound machines, allowing GPs to develop their scanning skills under the guidance of experts in the field. Furthermore, case-based discussions and real-life examples will be utilized to reinforce the clinical relevance of POCUS and promote its integration into daily practice.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained confidence in performing basic POCUS examinations, interpreting ultrasound images, and incorporating POCUS into their diagnostic decision-making process. The acquired skills will enable GPs to provide more timely and accurate diagnoses, improve patient management, and potentially reduce the need for unnecessary referrals to specialists. POCUSCave provides a unique opportunity to have Hands-on with various ultrasound devices guided by experts in the field.
Conclusion: The workshop on Point-of-Care Ultrasonography Training for General Practitioners is an invaluable opportunity for GPs to enhance their clinical capabilities, expand their diagnostic toolkit and to get inspired to researching the use of POCUS in GP. By embracing POCUS, general practitioners can play a vital role in delivering efficient and high-quality healthcare at the primary care level.
